The Temecula Library held a Barter Fair on March 20th, that was considered a great success. According to an article in the Temecula press, the
“Money Cents For Kids,” a program is financed by an investor education foundation grant corralled by Library Manager Rosie Vanderhaak. Other libraries in Canyon Lake, Lake Elsinore and Temecula received similar grants to educate folks about their finances before it’s too late. Alas, for many it already is.
On a recent afternoon, about 50 kids were doing a barter fest in which they brought old things from home — toys, games, books, electronics — and tried to trade for something else.
Vanderhaak said she got the bartering idea from former Temecula school board member Linda Campbell, who used it in her classroom when she taught fifth grade. The beauty is it teaches kids how to negotiate in a safe way. If they make a bad transaction, at least it didn’t cost them much.
Children’s Librarian Ginger Safstrom said bartering is a way for people to trade goods and services without using money. She reminded the kids that in a good negotiation, both parties must feel they got a good deal. Too bad more adults don’t practice that ethic.
