Interesting History on the Emergence of Currencies

The idea that currencies emerged from primitive barter economies is a standard idea, taught just about everywhere. Could it be that the history is false? This author thinks so:

No example of a barter economy, pure and simple, has ever been described, let alone the emergence from it of money; all available ethnography suggests there has never been such a thing.

It’s worth a good read if you have a couple of minutes.
