Virtual Barter, one of the few barter specific software providers, has added swipe capability to their system. According to their press release, exchange owners will now be able to provide trade transaction clearing with any merchant terminal or point of sale system, world wide. They assert the system is compatible with any terminal or system, requires no special software, no extra staff training, and no requirement to change merchant service providers.

The advantage of a swipe card system is apparent in the case of scrip or gift certificate programs. From their release:

(the Trade Card swipe system) Eliminates the hassle for your exchange to print scrip and manage scrip distribution.

• Members can now pay the exact amount of their purchase with trade dollars instead of buying scrip.
• Eliminates complaints about no change when a member’s purchase is less than the scrip amount.
• Eliminates the need to pay balances in cash when purchases are greater than the scrip amount.
