There are many benefits to participating in a barter situation in your business, but perhaps an often overlooked and underrated benefit is that of increased relationships. Bartering leads to new business, new clients, and new relationships that would be difficult to generate any other way. Consider the words of one blogger who wrote, ”

Why don’t we get rid of all currency and barter for things? Just think of all the different types of services that people could offer. I feel as though people in our society would have closer relationships with one another. It would force us to communicate on more of a personal level. It would also allow us to put ourselves out there and really figure out our self-worth. You would really discover what you are good at and stick with it. Creativity juices would be flowing as people would be coming up with different ways to offer their services in exchange for someone else’s. I feel it would also give more value to the things we both want and need. I bet our “want” list would get cut down pretty quickly if we knew how much labor and resources it would require to get.

My own experience with barter leads me to believe that doing more deals means more and better relationships. When you live in a quid pro quo world and barter is the means of transaction facilitation, communication becomes paramount.
